State and Federal Agencies Evaluate New Drought Contingency Plan To Help Commercial Fishing and Utilize Trucking of Salmon Smolts
These little guys are so vulnerable, even without drought conditions, there’s no good reason not to give them a helping hand in a pinch.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) have agreed on a temporary contingency plan for the release of hatchery smolts in 2014 due to drought.

WDFW Will Not Release Hatchery Steelhead Unless Legal Issues are Resolved
Is this steelhead “wild?” Does it have an adipose fin or is that just a weird reflection off a shadow? Hard to say, but what I do know is this fish fought hard and gave one lucky angler a memory they won’t soon forget.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) will not release early winter hatchery steelhead into rivers around Puget Sound as planned this spring unless it can resolve issues raised in January by the Wild Fish Conservancy and restated in a lawsuit the group filed this...

New "Twitch-blade" Jigs

Issue: February 2011

John’s Jigs introduces an exciting new “Twitch-blade” pattern to its popular line of steelhead and salmon jigs. Its innovative design was inspired by Frank Amato who would entice reluctant fish by adding a small spinner blade to the tail of his favorite salmon flies. Man does it work! These jigs fish extremely well for salmon when twitched just off the river bottom. They are also deadly for steelhead when fished under a float. The enticing Twitch-Blade easily spins when twitched or held against the current and it flutters like a spoon when dead-drifted. For more info visit: ?

New TUF-Line Tournament 8 New TUF-Line TOURNAMENT 8

Issue: June 2014

Delivers 8-Carrier Construction, Spectra Fiber Strength, and Superior Nano Coating Technology.

New Tournament 8 is an eight-carrier braid, utilizing eight fiber bundles in the completed line rather than the more common four- or six-carrier construction. Producing the line from an increased number of smaller diameter micro-filaments, Tournament 8 delivers an incredibly smooth exterior finish, exceptional inherent body and supremely round profile. The line casts and handles effortlessly.

Nano coating technology further refines Tournament 8 performance by creating a bond of nano particles resulting in a microscopic hydrophobic barrier. This barrier creates an ultra-smooth and highly durable finish. The coating reduces friction, increases casting distance and greatly extends the longevity of Tournament 8’s working life.

Tournament 8 is available in Green and Blue in 10-, 15-, 20-, 30-, 40-, 50-, 65- and 80-pound tests. Contact:

Piranha Propellers Piranha Propellers

Issue: May 2014

If you own a boat with a propeller you will hit it at some point, it’s just a matter of when. I run a jet unit on my main motor and most of my time is spent in shallow Northwest rivers, which results in me dinging or smashing a kicker propeller once or twice a year. The cost for repairing or replacing a propeller ranges from 65.00 to 150.00 every time—and that price can go way up if you damage the lower unit from a hard hit. Fortunately I just found the answer from Piranha Propellers, they have truly made a better mouse trap! Their propellers have removable blades that slide in and out of the hub, making repairs simple, vibrations gone and rebalanced in 5 minutes or less. Replacement blades start at $17.00. The unit also helps absorb shock to the lower unit.

Dutch Fork Dutch Fork Custom Lures Introduces Double Blade "No Loss" Quick Change Clevis

Issue: April 2014

You can now run 2 spinner blades side by side on one clevis without the fear of losing any blades. We took our original no-loss quick change clevis and created a triple sleeve with 2 metal no-loss clips. The same no chaffing plastic sleeve will not harm monofilament or fluorocarbon line. Upon moving through the water the blades will automatically slide out to the correct degree on the clip and blades will run opposite of each other with ease.

Ghost Blades size #5 and up work well on this clevis. You can now run 2 different colored blades and get a really wild effect as the blades rotate. The only downside we have found is our Ghost Blade willows don’t run on the double clevis because of their light weight and smaller cup, but metal willow blades and Colorado Ghost Blades work extremely well. G. Loomis IMX G. Loomis' new Series of IMX Salmon and Steelhead Rods

Issue: April 2014

At G.Loomis, we eat, sleep and breathe salmon and steelhead fishing. It’s one of our core competencies. Since we first started with regular graphite (GL2), we have been recognized as the leader in graphite rod technology. When we introduced IMX, back in 1986, it was that technology that put us on the map with its higher modulus and tensile strength. To the angler, that meant a blank that was noticeably lighter, far more sensitive and stronger than anything available at the time! Thanks to major improvements in graphite materials, new concepts in components and dynamic new actions, we’ve taken IMX to a whole new level. This new series of IMX salmon and steelhead rods provides anglers with the ultimate in light weight, sensitivity and strength. We’ve included the best of the best in technique-specific design, form, function and fit. It’s what makes G.Loomis the leader in high performance fishing rods. It’s all about helping you become a better angler! That means more fun and more success at the end of the day!
