Columbia River Fall Salmon Fishing Report | Buoy 10 & Beyond

August 5th, compiled by Lucas H.

The Buoy 10 Opener! What a long awaited fishery! Starting August 1st, the season kicked off with a bang, sputtered a little and then came back strong. Let's hear from a few guides about their experiences down in Astoria this year.

Cameron Black (Gone Catchin' Guide Service): "We're super optimistic, lots of Chinook, best opener we've seen in years! We had favorable tides and I think that gave us some good days, next week might be a little challenging due to bigger tides but the good news is, we know there is fish in the system and fish coming...it's a matter of making the right moves at the right time. Getting them on both bait and spinners so far. There will be fish caught every day, and the week following next will be wide open fishing! Upriver there is fish trickling in, but low counts. In the next couple of weeks that will definitely change."

Bill Monroe Jr. (Bill Monroe Outdoors): "It was a really hot start, now it's slowed down and we're losing tides for the good fishing up at Tongue Point, but it's picked back up again in the last two days. It's a fairly typical standard start to the season. Some hot fishing, then it cooled down...now we're at "medium" fishing."

Eric Swanson  "I'm right in the middle of an epic bite, can you call me back this afternoon?"

The season will continue, with Wild Chinook available soon and lots of Coho on their way. Although the Columbia River is just one major system, its typically a foreshadow of other Coastal Chinook Fisheries. Keep an eye out for an amazing season! - Lucas
